Below Deck, Episode 3, Season 1

The term “It’s not the size of the boat, but the motion of the ocean” definitely took over this charter trip, and the pun is included!

Apparently, it’s ok to be masculine, chauvinistic, organic, and fake tanned all at once – at least in this case. A group of guys decided, a charter would be the perfect way to get them some tail, and strip clubs are definitely in the picture. But before I get ahead of myself, the crew already knew this charter would be a mess, when they started sizing these guys up. Aleks even knew they would probably be a handful, so he told Eddie to make sure they keep the girls safe. The guys evenĀ proved the staff correct too, when not even an hour from entering the yacht, they were already jumping off the side of it. One of them also proved to us that, you can’t keep a sperm donor position for the rest of your life and yes, you can be fired as one.

The first night, Sam found a Skype call and it was Trevor for Dave. He had called to tell him happy birthday and happy anniversary. AND he proposed!!!!!!! What a sweet thing to do and I’m so glad they can keep a relationship even during that time – thank goodness for modern-day technology. Congratulations you two!!

After the Skype call, the charter asked to take Eddie and Dave to show them around – i.e. help them score some chicks. That failed rather quickly, when even at the strip club, the girls were flocking to Eddie and Dave instead. One of the guests, even pulls Eddie over to him, and informs him that their tip is based on whether he gets laid or not. Tacky!! And out of line if you ask me! While the guys were out livin’ it up, or down, back at the boat, a growing crush on one of them gets brought up. We are also informed that not only is Kat’s dad named John, but so is the cutest guy on the boat (that Kat and Sam both think are hot) AND that John happens to be a very popular name. Who knew?

The guys arrive back to the ship, with two women, and apparently they like to share! Women, not drinks, but who’s surprised. Laurence, the guy that’s apparently in a relationship with his razor, picks up a Brazilian woman. But he get’s upset and feels burned, because she blew a kiss to someone else. And as he told Sam, he’s apparently an “advanced player” and he can catch that before anyone can. I don’t know how much of that story I believe. Anyways, he lets John have her and whomever the other lady is. But C.J.’s fetish with the Brazilian is out of control and so his term “Dude”. And I quote, “Dude, that is a dude, bro.” But it’s okay, because now he has water to put out the flame in Sam’s heart towards John. In other words, there’s no more competition.

The next day, Laurence is awoken to himself, and it feels so good! Or at least that what he probably thinks. The conversation about the dude/girl gets brought up, and then Laurence tells us that if the Brazilian had chosen him, the part of being a dude wouldn’t matter. Honestly, the whole dude/girl subject should not have been such a big deal and I feel sorry for that girl if she was just built that way. And even if she was a male, who cares?

Later on, Adrienne wakes up Kat to work and a few hours later, she tells Kat she’s going to take a nap. Kat, shocked Adrienne made that decision, considering she didn’t get to bed till 5:30am. Adrienne walks off and Kat turns to Dave to start complaining about it, where we learn that Adrienne went to bed at 11pm the night before. The ridiculously funny part about it all, was that Adrienne said she was going to go take a thirty minute nap…. and naps for FOUR hours! Bless Kat’s heart. Not only did she have to take over for Adrienne, she can’t really “direct” Sam (but who can?), and do her own work – without sleep and for longer than planned. She was literally doing a 3 person job. When Adrienne FINALLY gets up, her and Kat get into a brief tiff over it – brief because Adrienne didn’t want to talk about it and didn’t feel she should have to explain herself. Adrienne said in the confessional, “Who do you think you are?” about Kat approaching her on the topic. Honestly, if I were Kat, I would have said something about it too. I understand, she is in higher rank, but that is still uncalled for. Kat was mad, and rightfully so. But I also think there could have been another way Kat could have approached Adrienne on it. Especially considering rank and the flack that Adrienne is already getting – not to mention the rebellion from Sam.

Kat, after the charter finally left the boat, asked Aleks to meet her, so they could talk about what to do. Aleks informed her that he understands Adrienne’s fallback, and that Sam isn’t really pulling her weight, but that it’s a cut-throat business. He knows things need to change, but maybe only time will tell. On another episode of course, because later, chaos unfolds between the girls: Adrienne really digs her claws in deeper by yelling at Sam to “Come here now!” and makes her re-clean a bathroom she apparently didn’t wipe down so good. Sam yells back that Adrienne should get her own rag, which was completely out of line, I thought, and then tells Adrienne she could have just taken a rag with her, when she’s checking her work and just wipe down what Sam may have missed. I Adrienne did what she did to make a statement – but I also feel like it was a little tedious.

On a serious note, tips are extremely serious. If you don’t have enough to tip, than don’t go. Even as the server I used to be, a small tip, is like a put down. And if you short-tipped them because you didn’t get any chicks, go shave your back hair. The staff did a great job, as usual!

  1. Excellent recap, Ashly. I’m sure the level of detailed cleaning Adrienne was stressing to Sam seems anal to most people, but that is what is expected in the yachting industry. I’m a former stew, and I remember thinking it was obnoxious when I first started. But the stories out there of yacht owners and guests coming aboard and ridiculing the crew for the smallest of cleanliness details are pretty shocking. Things like an owner’s wife running her fingers along the tops of picture frames on the wall that are WAY above eye-level, and then making a big deal about a small amount of dust that is found. (Every stew I know has her insane war stories, the worst being about owners, not charterers.)

While the charter guests coming aboard “Honor” for the show don’t seem that over-the-top, they are also not the typical “super-rich” guests that charter a megayacht of that size. I worked on the sister ship to M/Y “Honor” (same exact look and layout — a 164-foot Benetti that was launched just a year earlier; in fact, I attended the christening of “Honor” when she launched as M/Y “Lionheart” in 1999), and the type of guests that came aboard for 7+ days at $25,000 per day, before food, fuel, docking fees, and crew tip, are typically big, BIG money. And they are used to their living environments being pristine. Watermarks on bathroom mirrors and in bathroom sinks might as well be massive splatters of mud. While Adrienne’s attention to that detail may seem odd, she is experienced and has also been trained properly by taking steward/ess training.

In Sam’s defense, she is new to the industry and may not have known what was expected. (I can totally relate to Sam’s shock at a lot of it — even in the previews for next week where a guest brings tons of luggage and shoes. I remember being just as appalled my first couple months as a stew.) And I certainly remember thinking the first chief stew I worked under was anal. BUT, I learned fast that you do it the way it should be done, or you walk the plank. And it’s better to face the wrath of a fellow crewmember than the wrath of an owner, or a charter guest who is also supposed to tip you. At that level of money, their version of clean (right or wrong) is at a much higher standard than what most of us expect….or even notice, for that matter.

The one thing I can’t defend Sam on though is talking to her superior — let alone anyone — with that tone. I keep trying to cut her some slack knowing she’s just new to it all, but when she cops that attitude, it’s hard to do. It seems to be getting worse, too.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading the post a lot. I think you are very on-point with your take. I was also a bit amazed at the length of Adrienne’s nap and what was going on with her asking Kat to get up after she was up until 5:30. Not cool.

It sorta sucks for both Kat & Adrienne when they don’t trust that Sam can be counted on to pull her weight. Shape up, or ship out, for sure. When you have guests onboard (or coming onboard), it isn’t about YOU. It’s a service job, for crying out loud. She’s made it known that her education has qualified her to “solve rockets,” but guess what my dear, that’s not what we’re asking you to do here. Get over yourself.

    • Thank you so much Julie for this feedback! It’s like a blogger’s gold! And yes, having someone in that industry comment on mine, it’s almost euphoric! I have no clue how it is to be out there, but I try to keep a realistic opinion! And yes, I keep trying to give Sam some slack too, but her attitude is getting a little out of control. Who knows what is exactly going on and what is or isn’t edited in or out. I’ve also talked to some of the staff and they’ve clarified a few things that may or may not have changed my opinion on some level. Anyways, thank you so much for reading and giving your feedback!

  2. For sure! You’re a great writer.

And yes, the T.V. audience never knows what’s not being shown behind the scenes, or how things have been edited. šŸ˜‰

  3. My DVR was set to record episode 3, but for some reason ep. 1 was shown instead, under the title & description of ep. 3. I can’t find a rerun of ep. 3 set to play on Bravo, and the Bravo website doesn’t list a description or acknowledge ep. 3 ANYWHERE. Was there some kind of fall-out from this episode that would cause Bravo to pretend like it never existed? What is going on?

    • I was watching the same thing you were and expected the same thing as well. I do know that episode 3 is on OnDemand if you have access to that. If not, I’ll find somewhere you can watch it =)

      • I’m going to guess it has something to do with the transgender community raising a stink over the way that Brazilian model was mocked. I think Bravo caught some flack for that.

  4. Every time they re-air this sow, they leave out Episode 3. It’s no where to be found. It’s not even on On Demand. Why do you think it’s been pulled?
